Your hiking log, not just the trail guide

Most of what's on AllTrails belongs to AllTrails: the trail pages, reviews and difficulty ratings. Your account holds something else. It has the recordings of every hike you've tracked, the custom maps you drew before a trip, the waypoints you dropped along the way and the photos you took. That part is yours, and it's the part MapLiberator saves.

What you get from AllTrails

  • Recordings, each as a GPX track, with a JSON file beside it holding the name, description, dates, activity type, distance and climb, and a link back to the recording on AllTrails.
  • Custom maps, each as a GPX route with the same details.
  • Waypoints from your recordings and maps in one GeoJSON file. Each one links to the recording or map it was dropped on.
  • Your photos at the largest size AllTrails serves, each linked to the recording or map it was attached to.
  • Your lists in collections.json. The trails you saved to a list are written as links to their AllTrails pages with their names. Trail guides are AllTrails' content, not yours, so MapLiberator doesn't copy their geometry.

AllTrails has no areas, so the archive has no areas folder. MapLiberator writes each GPX file from the same map data the AllTrails website uses to draw the line on screen.

What AllTrails' own export does

AllTrails lets you download files from its website one at a time. For a recording, you open it from the Activities tab on your profile and choose Download route from the menu above its title. For a custom map, you open it from Saved › Custom routes & maps and choose Export route file. Either way you can pick from dozens of formats, GPX included.

That's fine for a few hikes. With a hundred recordings it means a hundred downloads, and your photos, waypoints and lists don't come with them. MapLiberator gets all of it in one run.

How to export everything from AllTrails

  1. Add MapLiberator to Chrome, Edge, Brave or Firefox using the buttons at the top of this page.
  2. Sign in at alltrails.com in the same browser.
  3. While you're on alltrails.com, click the MapLiberator icon in the toolbar and choose Export from AllTrails.
  4. Click Allow access to AllTrails and confirm in the browser prompt. MapLiberator asks for AllTrails and its image host only.
  5. Check that the account shown is yours (there's a Not you? link if it isn't). Leave everything ticked, or untick photos for a smaller file, and click Export.
  6. Keep the AllTrails tab that MapLiberator opens until the export is done, then save mapliberator-alltrails- and the date, as a ZIP.

MapLiberator takes AllTrails slowly, so expect a large account to take some time. If AllTrails shows a verification page partway through, the export pauses. Switch to the AllTrails tab, complete the check, and resume.

After the export

The GPX files open in Gaia GPS, CalTopo, Garmin BaseCamp, Google Earth and nearly every other map app. errors.json lists anything that couldn't be exported, with the reason.

The ZIP is a Portable Map Archive, an open format that works the same whichever site it came from. If you also keep data elsewhere, your AllTrails archive sits alongside the others in the same layout.

Not affiliated with AllTrails

MapLiberator is an independent, open-source project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by AllTrails. AllTrails is a trademark of its owner, named here only to say which site the extension works with. MapLiberator only reads your own account, signed in as you, the same way the AllTrails website does, and writes the archive straight to your computer. There's no MapLiberator server and no account to create.
